These past two weeks have been some of the greatest experiences of my life, and also some of the most life altering. Working at KOLD is so much fun, the hectic and always moving environment is the exact situation I want in my internship and my career. I feel that working under pressure and having a deadline for every assignment really has helped me tune my work ethic, which has then allowed my work to be that much better. I want to be a sports broadcaster, and the life that everyone believes that they lead couldn’t be further from the truth. Most think that the anchor just shows up, reads what on the teleprompter, and goes home, but there is so much more. All sports anchors at KOLD film their own segments, find all the highlights, log all the tape, and record all their audio. Then, they all come back to the studio and edit, dock, log, and transfer their film into the shows tape for that night. All of this is done just an hour or so before the show goes on, and when they are finished with that, they then go back and write their own scripts. I was initially scared of all these huge daunting tasks in front of me, but my boss told me that this is just the way it is, that I’ll get the hang of it right away and it will eventually just become second nature to me. After being there for two weeks, I can honestly say that he couldn’t have been more right. I think my personality helps here to, you need to have fun in this job. You spend so much time with the people you work with that you need to have a sense of humor to survive at times. Its also good to get to know as many people as you can, which I always try to do anyway. When we go to cover any high school or wildcat games, we see the same people every time, so its always nice to be on good terms.
With all of this said, this job can be very stressful at times. Some questions that I have been thinking about where, “How long am I going to go without getting a job offer after college?” The economy is so bad, its hard for television companies to give out new jobs, so you have to be at the top of your game, always. Also, “When will my personal life come back once I get a job offer?” My boss had told me that, “If you have a girlfriend at the beginning of this job, either marry her or break it off.” When you start, you have absolutely no free time, and its hard to hold down a strong personal life. Finally, “Am I going to be able to reach the ultimate goal?” I want to be on SportsCenter more than anything in the world. However, that is the superbowl of anchor positions, and a lot of people find it impossible to reach. I never say impossible, and know that with hard work, and the lessons that I am learning at KOLD, that I can reach my dream. I cant wait to see what I learn this week.
Thanks for sharing about your goals and experiences at KOLD. It's nice to get a picture of what matters most for you in the long run.
